KI 2982 Digitization of excerpts in reading lists (book chapters and journal articles)

(updated )
Part of the user guide for the reading list system Leganto.

Starting from the spring semester of 2026, UiB will replace the Literature Kiosk with excerpts available directly in the reading lists in Leganto. The excerpts must still be registered and rights-cleared in accordance with the Kopinor agreement (KI 0186), but will now be made available as PDFs in the reading lists, free of charge.

If you need information regarding reading lists for the fall term 2025, see Digitization of material for The Literature Kiosk - reading lists (KI 2550).
Journal articles and excerpts from books, that we do not have electronic access to (via subscription or open access), can in many cases be digitized and made available for the students. Course materials have to be registered for this use in accordance with the Kopinor Agreement. Digitized material to be used again in a new term, needs to be copyright cleared again, but the files can be reused.

Material that needs to be rights-cleared/digitized should be added to the reading list in the same way as other material (KI 2530) and must be tagged with 'Digitized excerpt'. Citations that are not tagged will not be processed for digitization.

Note! Make sure the pages to be digitized are clearly indicated, either by adding the start and end page to the reference or by including the information in a student note (KI 2543).

Once the reading list has been submitted to the library (KI 2560), the citation is reported to the digitization staff, who will apply for rights clearance and digitize the excerpt.

If you have the book/article available, you can inform the digitization staff. If you have a PDF available, it can be uploaded to the citation in the reading list (this does not apply if the excerpt has already been digitized). The digitization staff will contact the list owner(s) directly if needed.

Digitized material will be made available in the reading lists continuously leading up to the start of the semester. It is important to submit the lists well in advance, and at the latest by the deadline, to increase the likelihood that the course literature is ready by the start of the semester (KI 2559).

Note! If you add new references with the 'Digitized excerpt' tag after the list has been processed and published, you must resubmit the list.

Can't find the file in the reading list?
  • Firstly, go to the reading list in Leganto and check whether the citation is properly tagged with 'Digitized excerpt' (and contains correct page numbers). If not, add the tag and all necessary information, and let us know about it.
  • If the citation is tagged with 'Digitized excerpt', but the file is missing, it means that the digitization staff has not finished their work on this reading list yet.
  • If you have a PDF file available , contact the digitization staff, as it may save some time.
